About the Production
The ballet is based on Prosper Mérimée’s novella Carmen (and Georges Bizet’s famous opera) but presents a more condensed, symbolic, and dramatically intense retelling. Shchedrin’s score is a creative arrangement of Bizet’s melodies for strings and percussion only—giving it a modern, rhythmic, percussive edge with witty twists, while preserving the recognizable themes. Alonso’s choreography is passionate, sensual, and expressionistic. It blends classical ballet with Spanish and Cuban dance influences, emphasizing dramatic physicality, erotic tension, and emotional extremes. The work was initially controversial in the Soviet Union for its modernist approach and perceived “eroticism,” but it became a major success and signature piece for Plisetskaya and Alicia Alonso.
