About the Production
Radio and Juliet (often stylized as Radio & Juliet) is a contemporary one-hour ballet choreographed by Romanian dancer and choreographer Edward Clug (E. Clug). It was created in 2005 for the Slovenian company Ballet Maribor. It is a modern, stylized reimagining of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, told primarily from Juliet’s perspective. Unlike the traditional tragedy, the ballet does not strictly follow Shakespeare’s plot or end with a double suicide. Instead, it begins with Juliet awakening from her death-like coma to find Romeo dead. The story unfolds through her flashbacks and memories, exploring themes of love, loss, and survival in a mechanized, alienated world. Clug described it as a “twisted version,” not a direct retelling but an experiential piece offering a fresh perspective on the classic story. Key elements retained include the feud between the Capulets and Montagues and the masquerade ball scene, but the focus shifts to Juliet’s inner emotional journey. Notably, Juliet chooses to live rather than die.
