About the Production
Loosely inspired by One Thousand and One Nights, the ballet depicts the Sultan Shahriar, who—suspicious of his wife Zobeide’s fidelity—pretends to leave on a hunt. While he is away, Zobeide and the harem women indulge in a passionate orgy with the slaves. The Sultan returns unexpectedly, discovers the betrayal, and orders the execution of the participants. Zobeide ultimately takes her own life at his feet.
