About the Production
Chopiniana, also widely known as Les Sylphides, is a one-act, non-narrative ballet blanc (white ballet) choreographed by Michel Fokine. It is set to orchestrated piano music by Frédéric Chopin and is often described as a “romantic reverie” or “romantic daydream.”. There is no traditional storyline. The ballet evokes a moonlit, ethereal woodland scene where a young poet (or dreamer, dressed in white tights and a black velvet tunic) is surrounded by a group of sylphs—ethereal, white-clad female spirits. The dances express longing, poetry, and Romantic-era idealism through graceful, flowing movements rather than dramatic action.
